1 Dies In Child's Birthday Party Stabbing

Four Members Of One Family Stabbed By Party Guest

FARMERS BRANCH (CBS 11 News) ― Two brothers suspected in a deadly stabbing at a child's birthday party in Farmers Branch remain on the run.

According to police, on Saturday Benito Ortiz and his brother, Juan, went to the Ventana at Valwood Apartments and began to argue with four people, two male and two female, gathered with other family for a birthday party.

Juan is allegedly the ex-boyfriend of one of the women who was attending the party, 50-year-old Olivia Renteria.

At some point, Benito pulled a knife.

Olivia's daughter, 28-year-old Joanna Renteria, was one of the dozens of family and friends who came together to celebrate a 1-year-old's birthday.  Joanna jumped into the fight to protect her mother, but both women ended up getting stabbed.

Neighbor Christy Hickman said, "I saw a lot of fighting, beer bottles breaking, people running around, screaming and crying."

While undergoing surgery Joanna, who was stabbed in the neck and stomach, died from her injuries.

Joanna's brother, Eusebio Renteria, 28, and another family member were also stabbed.  Eusebio and his mother are expected to survive.

The Ortiz brothers left the apartment and are believe to be headed to Mexico. The men brothers were seen leaving the scene in a maroon 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, with Texas License Plate - #Y30-TXV.

Family members said they do not know what sparked the brothers' argument or why Benito Ortiz stabbed the Renterias.

"This is Farmer's Branch," neighbor Amber Butler said. "That's why I moved here. It's supposed to be really safe."

Farmers Branch Police have issued a Murder warrant for Benito Ortiz and a warrant for Hinder Apprehension for Juan Ortiz. Anyone with information as to their whereabouts is asked to contact the Farmers Branch Police Department at 974-484-3620.
