2 Dallas Streets Won't Be Renamed After Chavez

DALLAS (AP) ― The effort to rename Dallas streets for Cesar Chavez has failed.

Several Latino leaders in the nation's ninth-largest city have been upset that Industrial Boulevard won't be renamed despite a city survey that had "Cesar Chavez Avenue" the overwhelming favorite for the road's new name.

The City Council votes Monday not to rename Industrial or Ross Avenue -- activists' second choice -- weren't unexpected. The city has said it wants to look at other streets as possibilities to honor the former Latino civil rights leader.

The Council voted 12-3 to rename Industrial to Riverfront Boulevard. Ross will remain Ross.

Mayor Tom Leppert says he'll direct a committee to find a street to honor Cesar Chavez within 90 days.
